Episode 80 – Catface Meowmers

1024.Jen.JackN2.mh.022613

After a bout of insomnia, Anne’s back to watching TV & movies and so this week she offers up a review of Pain & Gain and ponders why Fringe is so hard to watch while Hannibal goes down easy, while Bill complains about Iron Man 3 (spoiler warning for that) and tries to talk about Star Trek Into Darkness without spoiling it for listeners (or for Anne).

And in the Geek Week In Review: My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, Disney’s ill-received 2D redesign of Merida (from Brave), how to cheat the lines at Disney parks, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s chances of getting an HD makeover, who we’d choose to direct the third movie in the next Star Wars trilogy (assuming J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird may be taking over the first two films) and the disaster that was Melissa Joan Hart’s Kickstarter.

  • Intro: Fringe (theme) – Michael Giacchino
  • Break: Unsquare Dance – Dave Brubek
  • Outro: Tonari no Totoro – As sung by Azumi Inoue

AT-AT

We’re both a little strung-out this week, but nether tax season nor lack of sleep is enough to keep us from our weekly rounds: Bill wrestling with the controls in Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and grumping about Don Draper-centric episodes of Mad Men while Anne talks about the History Channel show Vikings, the latest round of Benign Kingdom comics and a pair of Blendo Humble Bundle games.

On the Geek Week In Review: Ben Dewey’s custom AT-AT Walker walker, the most recent gutting of Disney’s hand-drawn animation department, the latest Xbox console rumors, disappointment in the casting of the 50th anniversary Doctor Who special, Batgirl’s transgender roommate and the archive of the first few hundred issues of Starlog magazine at Archive.org.

Then (starting at the 1 hr 20 min mark)  it’s our lengthy Bioshock Infinite spoiler talk: who did what and why, when and where, pick apart the sometimes clumsy gameplay and praise the nifty world-building, and sort out the questions we had when the credits rolled.

With the release of Bioshock Infinite and the 2013 Game Developers’ Conference happening this week, we’re in for a game-heavy episode, but first we talk about Bad Machinery, Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Search, Adventure Time and sex injuries. Then, inn the Geek Week in Review: Jeff Parker and Jonathan Case’s Batman ’66 comic series, what’s going on with Metal Gear Solid V/The Phantom Pain, Tenya Wanya Teens, the resignation of Yoichi Wada (and the decline of Square Enix in general) and the possibility of Scorcese drumming up a TV show based off of his adaptation of Gangs of New York.

Finally, at the 1:12 mark, we talk about the first 2 hours or so of Bioshock Infinite (up until when you meet Elizabeth for the first time). We theorize about what the hell is going on in the game, how the game might end, and gush over finally being able to play a game that isn’t afraid to tackle religious and racial themes.

  • Break: New York Girls (My Dear Annie) – Finbar Furey
  • 2nd Break: God Only Knows – The Beach Boys
